Cambridge IGCSE Programme

The IGCSE has a challenging and engaging curriculum that is designed to develop active inquiry and problem-solving skills, and our A-Levels programme is widely accepted at leading universities worldwide.

Cambridge IGCSE Curriculum

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a globally recognised two-year course for students aged 14 to 16 years. It is designed to provide a broad and balanced education, preparing students with the skills, knowledge and experience they need to succeed in the next stage of their educational journey and beyond.

The IGCSE curriculum at our school offers a wide range of subjects, allowing students to select a combination of compulsory and elective options based on their interests, academic profile, and their university and career aspirations. IGCSE pupils are assessed through a combination of coursework and external examinations at the end of the programme.

Cambridge International AS and A-Levels Curriculum

On completion of the Cambridge IGCSE, students may enter the A-Level programme. They can choose to study each subject for one year, gaining an AS-Level qualification, or for two years, earning a full A-Level qualification.

Studying A-Levels allows students to focus on specific subjects of interest. They can choose from a variety of subjects at our school and tailor their curriculum according to their career aspirations and academic strengths. This flexibility not only allows for personalised learning but also provides students with the opportunity to explore new areas of interest and develop a well-rounded academic profile.

IGCSE Subjects

Students must study a number of compulsory subjects, and can then choose from a variety of electives. We aim to provide a wide choice that reflects the diversity of our student body.

Compulsory subjects for IGCSE are:  English First Language, OR English Language and Literature, Afrikaans OR French for Second Language, and Mathematics.

Compulsory subjects for AS-Levels are: English Language, OR Language and Literature in English.

Students studying A-Levels may choose any subject listed at IGCSE or AS-Level, and students can elect to take either 2 or 3 A-Level subjects.

Elective subjects include: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, History, Geography, Business Studies, Accounting, Art and Design, Drama, Music and Mathematics.

IGCSE Grading System

The Cambridge International Grading System grades all work completed and submitted by students for assessment. This standardised grading system gives students a clear and comprehensive assessment of their knowledge and skills.

IGCSE grades are assigned based on performance in practical tests, exams and coursework. Grades range from A* to G (A* is the highest mark and G is the lowest). In case coursework and examination papers are not submitted, students will get an ungraded ('U') classification for that particular piece of work.

The A Level Grading System is slightly different, as grades range from A* to E. A* is the highest grade.

Cambridge International Assessment

Our Cambridge International programme in Durbanville includes both exam-based assessments and clear benchmarking.

IGCSE, AS Levels and A-Levels have an end-of-year exam system that allows teachers and students to explore questions with a depth and quality that sets it apart from other programmes.

Students should take one of these four subjects to ensure an exemption: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology. However, this is not always necessary, and many different combinations are possible, so please do check with teaching staff who will be happy to provide advice.

Entry into the A-Level programme is based on each student's performance in their IGCSE and AS Level courses. Generally, to gain entry to the AS/A-Level programme in a subject, students need to achieve a C grade in an equivalent subject at the IGCSE Level.

The two external exams provide a more flexible subject choice and subject load from Grade 11 onwards. Students do not have to continue with a second language beyond mid-Grade 11, allowing them the time and effort to focus on those subjects that will see them achieve an exemption qualification at the end of Grade 12.

Many students around the world progress to leading universities every year with Cambridge International AS and A-Levels, a qualification for students between 17 and 18 years of age.

The Cambridge International A-Level (Advanced Level) is a one year course, while the Cambridge International AS-Level course (Advanced Subsidiary Level) is taught for a period of 18 months. An AS-Level contains half the content of the corresponding A Level.

Some Cambridge International AS-Levels can be extended to A-Levels, providing a deep understanding of subjects and independent thinking skills.
